Rest in peace, Pope Francis

21 April 2025

Pope Francis 3

It is with deep respect and heartfelt sadness that SCIAF acknowledges the passing into eternal life of His Holiness, Pope Francis.

Throughout his tenure, Pope Francis’ profound empathy and leadership shed light on the systemic injustices faced by the world's most vulnerable. As the first Pope from the Americas and the Global South, with great moral clarity he reinvigorated global efforts to combat poverty and injustice.

His commitment to the marginalised led to the establishment of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development. This strengthened the Church's mission to promote social justice, peace, and care for creation globally.

His landmark writings, Laudato Si’ and Fratelli Tutti, called on all humanity to care for our common home and one another, highlighting the deep link between environmental degradation, the common good and the suffering of the poor. His words have challenged complacency and urged structural transformation to protect the most vulnerable.

Pope Francis’ leadership on Integral Ecology inspired the Scottish Catholic Education Service (SCES), SCIAF, and Justice and Peace Scotland (J&P) to launch the Laudato Si' Schools Scotland initiative, embedding ecological education at the heart of Catholic education. His vision continues to shape the next generation, fostering a lifelong commitment to environmental and social responsibility.

By declaring the Holy Year of Jubilee for 2025, Pope Francis reaffirmed his legacy of hope in difficult times, reminding us that faith and solidarity light the way forward and that ‘hope does not disappoint.’ His papacy has been a beacon of transformation, deeply resonating with SCIAF’s mission and values.

As the successor of St. Peter, Pope Francis carried forward the apostolic mission entrusted to him, leading the Church with humility and conviction. His leadership transformed not only the Church but also left an indelible mark on global humanitarian efforts. SCIAF remains committed to honouring his legacy by continuing to work for a better world for all.

In this moment of transition, we extend our prayers and gratitude to Pope Francis for his service and guidance.

May his soul rest in eternal peace,
as he is welcomed into the loving embrace of our Lord, joining the communion of Saints in eternal glory.

We ask St Francis of Assisi, whose name he bore, to intercede for him and for us as we continue walking the path of justice, peace, and care for creation.

St Francis of Assisi, pray for us.
