Haiti Emergency Appeal

Today we are launching an emergency appeal for the people of Haiti. A few days ago, the country was hit by another devastating earthquake which has killed at least 1,400 people and injured almost 7,000. Many buildings have been destroyed, including schools, hospitals and churches.

While the shaking has currently subsided, panic and immense suffering continue throughout the country. There is an urgent need for food, water, tents, hygiene kits and first aid.

Aloysius John, secretary general of Caritas Internationalis expressed his grief for the people of Haiti:

"We witness with compassion and sadness yet another natural disaster affecting the nation of Haiti. This follows the tragic earthquake that occurred 11 years ago and the numerous cyclones and earthquakes that have followed since then."

The government has now declared a state of emergency for one month. In a country in political turmoil, the relief operations are complicated not only by the terrible conditions of the roads but also by the high level of social tension. On 7th July, President Jovenel Moïse was assassinated – so this earthquake could not have come at a more difficult time for the nation of 11 million people.

Thankfully, through our partners, we're able to immediately reach out with compassion to those most in need. Our colleagues at Caritas Haiti are already there, working tirelessly to provide emergency relief where it’s needed the most.
