Caritas Cup Final Match Report
14 March 2025

Founded by former St Margaret’s High students Adam, Aiden, Bailey, and Daniel, the Caritas Cup unites young Catholics through football and netball tournaments – all to support SCIAF and other great causes. And last week, the football final of the Caritas Cup was held at Broadwood Stadium in Cumbernauld.
Josh Logan, an aspiring sports journalist from St Andrews & St Brides, wrote this excellent match report:
In a breathtaking Caritas Cup Final, St Andrews & St Brides High School triumphed over Cardinal Newman in a match that had it all – drama, tension, and two goals in the final ten minutes that secured them the victory. With a 2-1 scoreline, it was a final that will be remembered for its edge-of-your-seat excitement, and the sheer resilience of St Andrews & St Brides, who sealed their win in the dying moments of the game.
The match kicked off with both sides showing determination to lift the prestigious cup. A very one-sided first half saw no goals from either side, but saw St Andrews & St Brides dominate possession. The first half ended 0-0.
In the second half, the midfield battle was fierce, with both teams fighting tooth and nail for control. St Andrews & St Brides began to dominate possession again, but despite their efforts, Cardinal Newman’s defence stood firm denying several chances on goal.
Surprisingly, Cardinal Newman were the first to strike in the 60th minute. A beautifully hit freekick from 40 yards looped over the keeper, leaving him helpless. The opening goal sent the Cardinal Newman fans into raptures.
St Andrews & St Brides, however, were unshaken and continued to press forward, making some dangerous runs through the Cardinal Newman defence. As the clock ticked down, it seemed Cardinal Newman would hold on to their lead. That was until the 73rd minute, when St Andrews & St Brides launched a counterattack. The ball was played accurately by Number 10, and it found a pouncing number 12 on the edge of the box. A lovely finish into the back of the net brought the game level.
The Cardinal Newman defence was visibly rattled by the equaliser, and just five minutes later, disaster struck for them. In the 78th minute, the St Andrews & St Brides captain slotted away an easy goal to put them ahead. At 80 minutes, the final whistle blew; the St Andrews & St Brides players erupted in celebration, having secured the Caritas Cup with a stunning late comeback.
It was a match that showcased the true spirit of football, with St Andrews & St Brides never giving up – and proving that games aren’t won until the final whistle. For Cardinal Newman, it was heartbreak, but they should hold their heads high for a valiant effort. The Caritas Cup will be remembered as one of the most thrilling finals in recent history.
