SCIAF monitors deteriorating situation in DRC
30 January 2025
SCIAF is monitoring with grave concern the deteriorating humanitarian situation which is unfolding in the Democratic Republic of Congo. SCIAF has worked in the DRC since 2001.
The mineral rich country is the largest state in southern and central Africa and is no stranger to conflict, however the events of the last few weeks mark a serious deterioration in its stability. Notably the eastern DRC has been very unstable for around 30 years, resulting in the displacement of millions of Congolese people even before recent events.
The recent unrest piles instability upon instability and human suffering upon human suffering.
SCIAF works through partners in the area supporting women and girls who've been affected by sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV). We provide services like medical care, trauma counselling and legal aid, and working with women to build their self-esteem and their confidence.
Other work in the DRC includes improving people’s livelihoods, working to improve equality and challenging unequal power systems, helping communities prepare for and cope with emergencies and also advocating for people especially women affected by SGBV.
Current situation
We know that M23 rebels have taken large parts of Northern Kivu, including its capital Goma. Aside from the dangers of the violence itself, people are facing an acute hunger crisis and there are reports of widespread human rights violations as well as rape and sexual assault.
Our partners work in communities that are in the front line of the conflict. SCIAF projects operate in South Kivu and Bukavu, which are affected by the fighting. Also, the hospitals they run are on the frontline and are treating the growing numbers of wounded.
Here at SCIAF, we stand in solidarity with our partners in DRC and will continue to work with them to assist anyone in need and give humanitarian assistance where we can. In the last few days, we have sent £10,000 from our Emergency Fund to help those caught up in the dire situation.
Please keep the people of the DRC and our partners in your thoughts and prayers.
