Every mother deserves a safe birth, and every baby a bright future.

When Sharon went into labour, she couldn’t feel her legs. She had to be carried from her home to the community’s broken-down clinic. A mattress was dragged behind her and dropped on the floor. That’s where she would give birth.

Her dignity was destroyed; her safety compromised.

When delivering, I feared I would die. There was no floor in the clinic, just sand everywhere and some tarpaulin on the ground. Then, one hour later, my baby stopped breathing, and I feared my child would die.

Inadequate healthcare leaves the poorest, most vulnerable people defenceless, demeaned, and in danger. For pregnant women, it turns what should be a time of excitement and hope into some of the most terrifying moments of their lives.

Thanks to your support, a new clinic has been set up in the community. It has a proper door, a secure roof, and a solar-powered light. It is prepared for expectant mothers, stocked with clean, safe medical equipment, and beds.

Georgina became one of the first women to give birth in the new clinic, and her family were also enrolled in a SCIAF project that provides essential access to food and water. Her husband Marco attended farm training and is growing vegetables. Their family now has something to eat all year round.

Having the clinic repaired, and health staff visit each month, is very good for the community.

Just a few weeks ago, I spoke to Sharon in her rural community in Zambia. I struggled to imagine the fear she must have been experiencing. I couldn’t help but think of how Mary must have felt bringing her baby into the world more than 2,000 years ago.

The clinic is now a sanctuary of life and hope for women and their families. Thanks to your generous donations, women in this area now can give birth in comfort and security, with dignity and hope.

This Advent, please support women like Sharon and Georgina, to help them give birth in comfort and security, and give their babies a bright and joyful future.

Your gift can help the poorest mothers and their children across the world by rebuilding critical infrastructure like maternity clinics and supporting their families to secure their basic needs, grow more food and access clean, safe water.

Help deliver safe births and bright futures this Advent
