Monthly Prayer: August

Monsignor John Rooney and John McKee, a Head Teacher,  founded SCIAF in 1965. It is not a surprise then, that education has always been a part of SCIAF’s mandate set by the Bishops.

It is vital that all ages reflect on the world we live in. Our response through prayer and in our giving, but also in our learning, is paramount in creating a just world.

Our programmes across Africa, Asia and Latin America promote the development of the whole person, upholding dignity, listening to and empowering project participants.

Our mission in Scotland is to share how Christ’s love compels us to respond in the way that we do with and through our partners.

We spoke to parishioners at St Ninian’s & St Cuthbert’s. Here’s what they had to say about a SCIAF-led workshop they held.

“We need more workshops like this in every parish in Scotland to celebrate our beautiful human family and how we can care for each other.”
– Susie

“SCIAF is about empowering others and this workshop empowered us to talk about our faith in a safe place”
- Kevin

Ashley Pinna, a teacher at St Clare’s Primary in Newton Mearns commented on the importance of SCIAF’s development education.

“As a primary school teacher, the wealth of resources that SCIAF provides, enables me to deliver meaningful lessons to all of my learners. The resources are engaging, interactive and fun and allow me to enhance the curriculum and Catholic ethos within my classroom. The workshops SCIAF provides are excellent – they connect the learning taking place in the classroom, with genuine real life issues, giving learners a far deeper understanding.”

Let's pray

Give thanks that education and prayer has always been a part of SCIAF’s mission from its inception.

Pray for the development education work of SCIAF. Pray that schools and parishes will use resources and invite SCIAF speakers to deliver workshops.

Pray for our children and young people as they start a new academic year. Pray that they will continue to grow in their faith.

Pray that children and young people continue to grow as global citizens, looking to serve others.

The SCIAF workshop took my eyes where my heart needed to go. You need to know what’s happening in the world to be able to help, although it can be a tough watch sometimes.
