Emergency in Pakistan
29 August 2022
Pakistan is in a state of emergency. More than 33 million people have been affected by extreme flash flooding as rising waters have hit all corners of the country since June. Over 1,000 people have died and nearly one million homes have been destroyed.
This humanitarian disaster represents yet another devastating consequence of the climate crisis. Repeated cycles of torrential monsoon rain, coupled with faster-than-average glacier melt from the north has left people in perilous danger, stranded, and without access to their most basic needs: food, water, shelter and health care.
However, thanks to the global Caritas network we are already supporting those most in need. Our experienced partner, Caritas Pakistan, were able to respond right away, providing life jackets and boats, food and clean water, health care and temporary shelter, and solar lights and fans which can work while electricity supply remains a challenge.
As well as providing immediate assistance we will continue to work with those affected by the floods to help them rebuild their homes and livelihoods.
Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have died or lost loved ones and are struggling at this time. To help people affected by the devastating floods in Pakistan and other emergencies around the world, please donate to our Emergency Response Fund. Your gift will help us reach those hit first and worst.
