Shotts prison inmates get on their bikes for the WEE BOX

Seven inmates at HMP Shotts Prison jumped on their exercise bikes today for a 200-mile sponsored cycle challenge to raise money for our life changing WEE BOX appeal.

The inmates were joined on their bikes by our Director and keen cyclist Alistair Dutton and our Communications Manager, Val Morgan.

Despite only getting £15 per week, the inmates have encouraged friends and families to give generously and have raised a fantastic £800 from other inmates so far.

The generously-spirited inmates decided to raise money for our work after Alistair spoke at the prison last August. During that visit they discussed how conflict, inequality and poverty stop people flourishing and living their lives to the full, both in Scotland and overseas.

One of the men taking part told us;

"We’re in here, we’ve done bad things, so it’s good to do good things. There’s a lot of money in the world but it goes to the wrong places. SCIAF put it in the right places, getting in about in poor countries, helping people….doing what it says on the tin!"

The men decided they really wanted to help by organising a sponsored cycle challenge in the prison gym and donating the money to our WEE BOX Lent appeal. The money raised will help our work with some of the poorest people in the world affected by hunger, poverty, war, disease and natural disasters.
