Deadly tsunami hits Indonesia
29 September 2018
We are sending £20,000 to help survivors of the deadly tsunami in Indonesia which has left over 1350 people dead, hundreds injured and many homes, businesses and local services destroyed. Nearly 18,000 people are now homeless.
As well as sending funds we're in contact with our sister agency, Caritas Indonesia, to determine what more we can do to help. Teams from Caritas Indonesia have moved to help people in the affected areas and are undertaking a rapid needs assessment.
Three-metre-high waves swept through the city of Palu on Sulawesi island following a magnitude 7.5 earthquake just off the coast on Friday evening. Strong aftershocks have hit the city on Saturday.
Hospital and hotels have also been destroyed and the main road in Palu is currently blocked after a landslide. The airport is closed due to damage to the runway.
People are being treated in the open air and residents advised not to return to their homes. There will be an urgent need for temporary shelters, medical supplies, food and clean water.
Please pray for all those affected by this terrible disaster.
