Providing hope for farmers
18 November 2021
There are solutions to the Climate Emergency. And you can help us provide them.
Solar irrigation
Most small farmers in poorer countries rely solely on rain to water their crops. This makes them extremely vulnerable to the effects of climate change such as flash floods and droughts.
Your gift could allow a farmer to install a solar irrigation pump to irrigate their crops using water from far off wells or bore-holes, making crops less vulnerable to droughts and dry weather.
Vegetable gardens
Less labour-intensive and much easier to irrigate should the rains fail, these small vegetable gardens have proven to be a lifeline for farmers struggling to feed their families through droughts. In many cases, not only do they allow farmers to put food on the table, but they even produce a little bit extra to sell at market.
With your support, farmers and their families can establish small vegetable gardens around their homes.
Drought resistant seeds
Some seeds – such as millet and sorghum – are naturally drought resistant and can survive in conditions where water is scarce. But these cereals are expensive to buy and expensive to store, which keeps them out of reach for the vast majority of rural farmers in Africa.
Your gift can fund seed programmes across Africa to help make these drought-resistant seeds accessible to families in most urgent need.
Diversification
The number one way we can help farming families become more resilient to the effects of climate change is to support them to diversify their crops and livestock, changing what they farm.
Your gift today could directly buy livestock such as pigs, goats and chickens for farmers who are living in some of the world’s poorest places. You could also buy vital tools to help farmers work the land more efficiently, more sustainably, and to dig much needed wells.
